Album review: Brighton Port Authority

I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat

Facts about this album:

*Brighton Port Authority is Norman 'Fatboy Slim' Cook's 19th musical alias.

*The title of 'We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat' is taken from the 1975 film Jaws.

*BPA have cooked up a 'hilarious' mythical backstory for the album which includes lost reel-to-reel tapes and a mystical guru called Baba Ganoush.

Album review:

Ten years after big beat, Norman Cook is ripe for reinvention. So what worked for Tom Jones could work for him: invite

a flotilla of talent old (Iggy, Martha Wainwright, David Byrne) and new (Emmy, Dizzee, uh, Conan Moccasin), to participate in your project. Then throw in a new nom de dance and backstory about how these are the rediscovered ‘master tapes’ for some ‘seminal’ record ‘lost in the ’70s’. Sound smart? It would be if he hadn’t served it up with such flaccid beats.

Norm’s ongoing mojo-crisis still shows, and even Jamie T, a boy who knows his way around a calypso-tinged dance number, struggles to locate a hook in this irritating series of greyed-out blotches of Balearic funk.
