Around The Well

Album review: Iron And Wine

8 / 10 Two years after Iron And Wine unleashed their socio-political beast ‘The Shepherd’s Dog’ comes this reminder of the delicate charm and dexterity of unlikely alt.folk hero Sam Beam. Stripped of the adventurous calypso-fused elements of its predecessor, ‘Around The Well’ dips into the band’s lush back catalogue of lost gems and rarities (‘The Trapeze Swinger’, ‘God Made The Automobile’), taking in a cover or few on the way (The Postal Service’s ‘Such Great Heights’, The Flaming Lips’ ‘Waitin’ For A Superman’, New Order’s ‘Love Vigilantes’). Resplendent with Beam’s raw, whispered tones and snatched memories wrapped in the warmth and emotional calamity Iron And Wine are known for, it’s vintage stuff.
