Round Squared: Weirdbag Vol 1
"For too long seen as fromage-handbag central, Birmingham now boasts a wealth of creative producers unafraid to dip it in the sour cream,"...More on
There's the experimental techno enclave of the House Of God club, for one, and its alumni are amply represented here. Trailblazers Surgeon, Sir Real and DJ Bigfoot each contribute typically nervy, compulsive outings, with Sir Real scoring maximum points for the dead clever techno-tease that is 'Darmax'. Then there's the analogue electronica massive, the cream of whom have been whisked off to Sheffield's Warp label. But while the Round posse is, on paper, keen to recognise the sonic contribution of bands like Broadcast, Plone look a little lonely on the tracklisting as the sole spokesmen for their Moog-based craft.
Meanwhile, darkcore operatives PCM stealthily provide 'Round Squared''s highlight with 'White Widow', a sleek, scary chunk of urban dread. They're remixing Pram, the Round release informs us. Now that really would be the sound of Birmingham feasting on itself.
