Prior to that misunderstood UNKLE album, James Lavelle seemed far happier running his record label....
Remixed by Brighton's Psychonauts, 'Time Machine' is a crude distillation of Mo'Wax's first six years; and from the articulate breakbeat science of genre-defining DJs Krush and Shadow to the sleazy prurience of LA oddballs Sukia and the wine-bar waxings of Attica Blues, it's been an interesting, if only occasionally excellent, progression. The Psychonauts' brief was to tastefully cram as many Mo'Wax records as possible into 37 minutes - they manage nearly 50. They've created a whole new track from their labelmates' tunes. In a matter of seconds we dart through barely recognisable snippets by La Funk Mob, Andrea Parker and RPM.
But the intricate, dancefloor-friendly nature of the 'Nauts turntable trickery means that the end result sounds like a very long, though often funky, drum solo. Which for the pedantic trainspotter is marvellous news. Everyone else will get itchy feet.
