Country Grammar

They call it Nellymania in the States, where this idiosyncratic

St Louis rapper's adept fusion of digital funk and spliff-enhanced party rhetoric has swiftly become the hip-hop sensation of the year. Doing for the cesspool of his hometown what the local tourist board previously thought impossible, Nelly has managed

to make St Louis appear cool

and culturally significant. Major label hip-hop scouts scour its suburbs for new Nellys, oblivious to the fact that, on the strength of this single at least, one is more

than enough. Country hip-hop:

it wouldn't work over here.

"From the mean streets of Dawlish" doesn't have quite the same ring, does it?
