Witness : Audition

Hardly original on either hand, breaking no new ground whatsoever, yet when his band pipe down, Starkie at least sounds comfortable and in his element.

Witness : Audition

A curious record, suggesting the soul of [a]Witness[/a] is under siege. "A stitch in time, don't leave it to me, no/'Cos I've got rags where my riches should be". For two minutes, 'Audition' tags such workaday sophistry to just the sort of clotted psychedelic blues that a band so closely implicated with The Verve might be expected to peddle. Then, quite abruptly, Gerard Starkie is left to mourn alone, in a sparsely adorned Nick Drake-stylee. Then the squall stirs up again. Hardly original on either hand, breaking no new ground whatsoever, yet

when

his band pipe down, Starkie at least sounds comfortable and in his element.

Point of information: Nick Drake recorded for Island. Didn't sell many records while alive.
