EP 1

4 / 10 It's no surprise that Mind Horizon boss Damien Lazarus is associate editor of Dazed And Confused, as much of this sampler for his new label consists of overwhelmingly 'trendy' grooves to self-consciously wiggle your acupuncture-clad foot to.

First up is Mustang, aka the Manga-monikered Alex Attias, and his dodgy modal jazz breakbeat extravaganza 'Starwatcher'. Not content with half-inching his song title from 4 Hero, he then proceeds to sound just like them, albeit in a 'cool' late-'90s postmodern stylee.

Position Normal also offer nothing new and instead attempt to 'do' Bristol trip-hoppers Alpha - but it's all just breathy petulance with little substance. Ex-Weather Prophet Pete Astor follows in his guise as Wisdom Of Harry, but simply offers a poor man's Massive Attack.

True, San Franciscan hip-hopper L*Roneous' basic beats sound like they've been beamed in from the 23rd century, but they do little to save this from being as studied and soulless as a glossy fashion feature, or a pouty super-waif catwalking down Portobello.
