Charlatans : We Gotta Have Peace
More falsetto from Burgess and boysMore on
One feels like an insufferable churl laying into anything connected to the Warchild organisation, but special exception must be made here for Tim Burgess’ agonised falsetto, which sounds like he’s singing while pumped full of helium, with a car compressor slowly squeezing it out of him. He may imagine it sounds like Curtis Mayfield, which is why the human imagination is such a wonderful thing. Despite this, ‘We Gotta Have Peace’ is a funky exercise in sweet rabble-rousery with nice nouveau-baggy beats and a lyrical theme that only a buffoon would attempt to dispute.
