Fractured Life

Anyone with even an ounce of rock’n’roll spirit would probably rather go 10 rounds with Josh Homme than listen to ‘Fractured Life’. Piano-driven? Hailing from BOURNEMOUTH? Haven’t we been here before with Keane, Athlete and fucking Captain? Well, bugger us sideways, it’s actually not that bad! Opener ‘Just Abuse Me’ (despite having a name like a rejected Evanescence B-side) is an entirely pleasant piano-pop romp that doesn’t put a foot wrong, while ‘I Like That’ is an equally lovely cross between Ben Folds Five and ‘In It For The Money’-era Supergrass. So the vocals occasionally stray into bedwetter territory, and it’s inevitable that songs such as ‘Shooting Star’ will be daytime radio fodder in a matter of months, but who cares? Air Traffic are frivolous, fun and far better than Maroon 5.

I agree that the similarities between Keane and Coldplay can't be denied but for me, Air Traffic have managed to exceed both these bands by swinging from slow piano ballads (No More Running Away + Shooting Star) but then alternating to more upbeat and jazzy songs (I Like That + Charlotte). This album was a pleasure to listen to and surely deserves a rating of more than 6/10. Another great aspect of Air Traffic is their ability live. They were absolutely fantastic live and their sing-a-longs creat a fantastic atmosphere. I certainly hope this bands gets the crucial second album, and it is a success. And as for being from Bournemouth, well I know that Bournemouth's list of bands from there isnt fantastic but surely that should be celebrated. You can't judge a band on its origins.A great album.8 out of 10.
