Album Review: Airship – ‘Stuck In This Ocean’

An album that reflects 18 months of hard, gritty work

[a]Airship[/a], the first in a glut of Manchester guitar bands formed around 2007/8 who left hype-mongers abuzz, are the last to release an LP. Time hasn’t been spent idly watching [a]Everything Everything[/a], [a]Delphic[/a] et al’s rise however; ‘Stuck In This Ocean’ reflects 18 months that’s seen the quartet support [a]The Joy Formidable[/a] and [a]Biffy Clyro[/a]. ‘Invertebrate’ swells irrepressibly, while ‘Kids’ matches Danish group [a]Mew[/a] in its successful balance of sincerity and bombast. Though nothing seems to have really moved on from the soft-ended post-rock of the mid-’00s, hopefully [a]Airship[/a] haven’t left it too long; within this ocean lie some delicious catches.
