Bo Ningen – ‘Line The Wall’

The first noises on Bo Ningen’s second album suggest the Japanese psych-warriors may be approaching a Horrors-ish enlightenment. Opener ‘Soko’ rumbles along with a Toy-like squall that’s backed by PiL’s icy drum thunder. ‘Henkan’ is similarly exciting – all Gang Of Four sheet-metal-guitar crunches and a bizarrely baggy Shaun Ryder vocal from singer Tiagen. From there things lock into a krautrock-y throb’n’groove that falls either side of ‘poundingly hypnotic’ and ‘slightly tiresome’. Intermittently thrilling stuff, but the NME Album Of The Year Award will have to wait.
