Knives Don’t Have Your Back
As leader of Metric, Emily Haines is the queen of icy cool – her nihilistic lyrics and nonchalant vocals sit perfectly against their New Wavey Wall Of Noize. But ‘Knives Don’t Have Your Back’ shows a different side to the elf-like singer. These 11 songs – recorded on and off between 2002 and 2006, find her stripped down and strung out like a Canadian Cat Power. Backed by a piano and a few subtle musical additions courtesy of The Soft Skeleton, on tracks like the bleak ‘Doctor Blind’, ‘Crowd Surf Off A Cliff’ and ‘Mostly Waving’, Haines might sound pissed off and panicked, but lacking the urgency and destructiveness of her main band the emotions on display sound hollow. The lows are low for sure, but the highs are largely absent.
