This is an album for the long haul
With a melancholic tone to turn sprightly sentiments into something innately heartbreaking, F&O frontman Tim Cohen’s voice is the perfect contrast to his band’s garage-rock jangles and San Fran vibes. It’s the way The Fresh & Onlys nail the contradictions between lyrics and melody that fuels the great music here. ‘Dream Girls’ muses bitterly on femmes fatales, but it’s set to a plinky-plonky backdrop that sounds far from resentful. On ‘Long Slow Dance’ there may be a lack of standout moments that immediately grab your attention. But, as its title suggests, the album is one for the long haul rather than instant gratification.
