There’s something rather incongruous about [a]Gruff Rhys[/a] turning his hand to a Christmas EP, like Damien Hirst proffering a simple sketch of a fruit bowl. Luckily, though, ‘[b]Atheist Xmas[/b]’ avoids the dreary claptrap of other offenders. ‘[b]At The End Of The Line[/b]’ recounts December 25 with a companion “[i]diagnosed with manic depression[/i]”, while there’s little pulling of crackers in the nuclear-ravaged, Motown-tinged ‘[b]Post-Apocalyptic Christmas[/b]’ as Gruff disconcertingly chirrups: “[i]We lick our wounds to kill the hunger[/i]”.
