A Dense Swarm Of Ancient Stars
Facts about this album:
* I Monster are Dean Honer and Jarrod Gosling.
* They have recently worked with Roisin Murphy and Lupe Fiasco.
* ‘A Dense Swarm Of Ancient Stars’ is their second album, the follow-up to 2004’s ‘Neveroddoreven’.
Avoiding their hometown’s glacial synth legacy, Sheffield duo I Monster set up a psych-pop carnival sideshow. Think The Beatles’ ‘Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!’ gliding in an escapist’s slipstream with The Kinks’ ‘Dedicated Follower Of Fashion’, as on ‘Dear John’. That may be perfect for bankers’ panic, but the kaleidoscopic jumble proves you can never have too many ideas as long as you keep an eye on editing. The buzz-fest ‘Inzects’, the vaudeville ‘A Pod Is Waiting’: I Monster ache to show how wide-ranging they can be. They may not have a message beyond something like
‘I love your gabardine beard, pass the tea that tastes of pink’, but they’re not so beastly either.
