THE NATION IS SLOWLY LOSING the plot, as we live out our lives to the thud of a thousand clichis lumping up the charts under the guise of ‘real’ emotion. It’s serious, of course, but nothing that can’t be cured with a shot in the arm, a blast of originality, a damn good kicking. It’s an ideas thing, apparently. And Electrasy reckon they’ve got some top ones.
Delving far back (at least four whole years) into their record collections, they’ve picked out all the things they really, really love about music, sent them off on a wobbly little conveyor belt to come out all new and shiny and original. All of which would be great, but for two small problems. One, the gentlemen of the West Country have forgotten the difference between sounding brilliantly eclectic and just having loads and loads of different stuff. And two, when they get bored of not being brilliantly eclectic, they produce exactly the kind of stodgy lighters-aloft anthems (‘Angel’, ‘Morning Afterglow’) that they profess to despise.
All of which makes ‘Beautiful Insane’ a frustrating, maddening experience. Whether it’s the dopey-fun new wave of ‘Best Friend’s Girl’, the stumbling ‘Born Slippy’ pastiche of ‘Chemical Angel’ or the plaid-shirt-long-shorts fuzz of ‘Demented’, any creative sparks are stamped out before they have a chance in order to pay homage to every record ever.
So, while it’s true that you can never have too many good ideas, Electrasy need to work out when just one is enough.
