DJ-Kicks

Clear a space on the futon among the style mags, kick off your ultra-rare trainers and relax. In the world of life and style, it’s the perfect time for the DJ mix album, the musical microwave meal that provides instant hipster ambience in the comfort of your own Wallpaper*-friendly home. Or possibly just enables you, if so inclined, to remix your domestic squalor from the comfort of a tea-stained sofa.

Adding his Parisian charms to the ‘DJ-Kicks’ series, [a]Kid Loco[/a] mixes and blends with the soft-focus promise of a Nescafi ad. Unfortunately, this means the likes of Deep Season and Jazzanova rock like a beret on a coffee table, while too many people still entranced by the word ‘cinematic’ pretend they’re hanging out with Carol Reed in postwar Vienna. Better to hang by the skin of your teeth from Boards Of Canada‘s splendidly uncanny ‘Happy Cycling’, or the Underdog‘s fractured de-mix of Lisa Germano‘s ‘Lovesick’. For although Loco is drawn to the smooth like a moth to a Dunlop lighter flame – his ‘Flyin’ On 747′ grooves like a duvet – with Underworld unhinging their heads on ‘Blueski’ and Future Pilot AKA upping the mantric ante on ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, the atmosphere takes an irresistible turn into electro-murk.

Come home late after a hard day, you might be glad of it. Find it in the chilled cabinet.
