Some people wouldn’t know dancefloor music if it trod on their toes with a pair of size 13 Dr Martens. And anyone who can dance to any part of the seventh LP by John Coxon and Ashley Wales must be a robot. What ‘Disappeared’, in all its stealthy innovation and breathless compendium of sounds, amounts to, is a kind of avant-garde [I]musique concrhte[/I] – difficult noises shrouded in a cloak of accessibility.

In theory, a drum’n’bass element exists in ‘Rachel Point’ and a hefty hint of dub underpins the beguiling ‘To Die A Little’, but that’s what it remains – a theory. Studio boffins sketching out aural treatises on the idea of dance. Which doesn’t mean there’s any superfluous fluff here. On the contrary. It’s just that false premises – the thought of SHJ as dance controllers – do rankle.

When taken on their own terms, the often playful duo are fluent in the art of non-verbal communication, as the sepia-toned, grainy title track attests in a two-part articulation of loss. The sheer visceral excitement contained within ‘Galina’ and the abrasive ‘Mit Wut’ is also more of a mainline 2000 rock’n’roll noise thrill than anything else. Even they – grudgingly – would admit as much. Why else does the doleful bassline on ‘Trouble & Luck’ replicate an ancient Led Zeppelin riff? Case rested.
