Pulp Fusion – Evolution (Harmless)

Volume five in a series of superbad early-’70s funk collections, when flautists, bongo players and wah-wah guitarists ran joyously rampant, unaware the impending disco era was about to put them on the breadline.

Necessary or evil? These tracks have proven a goldmine for samplers and retro-merchants. Nice to hear these cuts in their unadulterated, unexploited form. Best here are Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Band’s clipped, brassy ‘What Can You Bring Me’ and Lonnie Liston Smith’s spacegroovelicious ‘Cosmic Funk’.
