Once again, no-one is safe. Aliens, deviant technology, giant insects – all these and more, according to Chicago’s Curtis Jones, are gradually infiltrating our lifestyles and wreaking discreet havoc upon our ecosystems. Is this pre-millennial paranoia? Is he just nuts? Really, it’s hard to say.
[a]Green Velvet[/a] is Jones‘ mildly eccentric alter ego – the David Icke of Chicago house, if you will – and a far cry from his erstwhile (and significantly saner) garage-producing Cajmere persona. His first album as the alleged alien abductee and grand conspiracy theorist, ‘Constant Chaos’ seamlessly marries Jones‘ twin obsessions, namely his quasi-cosmic brand of cyber-existentialism and, more importantly, a coolly irreverent appreciation of his hometown’s dance legacy.
Cynics may question his sincerity, psychiatrists his sanity. Certainly, seven minutes of Curtis sleepily deliberating on the relative merits of being reincarnated as a water molecule on, um, ‘Water Molecule’ would be intolerable were it not for the track’s stark, linear funk and rich undulating techno.
Such stoned logic is applied with equal amusement to ‘Save The World’, ‘Technology’s Out Of Control’ and, yup, ‘Abduction’, though Jones‘ startling aptitude for stripped-down, minimalist techno, percussive house and alarming electronic abstraction ensures that he always enjoys the last laugh.
Funny stuff, then, but not funny ha-ha.
