Reykjavik band bring Icelandic charm to electronic pop
The fact that Reykjavík trio Samaris sing 19th-century Icelandic poetry in their native tongue ought to be a barrier. Brilliantly though, the lack of a common language doesn’t stop you getting swept up in the band’s slick and strangely sensual world. Part of the charm comes from vocalist Jófríður Ákadóttir: rolling every consonant, she veers from chanting Lynchian incantations (‘Nótt’) to exhaling dramatically over icy breezes of Áslaug Rún Magnúsdóttir’s clarinet (‘Máninn Og Bróðir Hans’). It’s Þórður Kári Steinþórsson who creates the atmosphere that surrounds her though, with spacious electronics that glide along like Purity Ring in a distant parallel universe. Forget the phrasebook – Samaris are worth your attention even if you can’t follow a word they’re saying.
