Feels a bit cold, clinical and repetitive
Purists be warned – vast Ibiza megasynths that would make Tiesto blush aren’t the sort of sounds you’d normally associate with Squarepusher, but ‘Ufabulum’ is dripping in them. Purists relax – it’s also full of the brain-frying rhythmic trickery and wit he’s made his hallmark. ‘303 Scopem Hard’’s belching din is agreeably doolally, while ‘Unreal Square’ is a Nintendoid sea shanty culminating in a frenzied jungle wig-out. The album’s been made as an accompaniment to an eye-popping visual show, and you’d imagine it would be jolly good fun in this context. Without it though, it’s all feels a bit cold, clinical and repetitive.
