Teen movie fanatics fail to ace the test of providing the perfect soundtrack to a documentary on the subject
Summer Camp’s 2010 debut EP ‘Young’ was the perfect soundtrack to the best flick John Hughes never made. Ironic, then, that ‘Beyond Clueless’, a soundtrack to a crowd funded documentary about teen movies, is largely devoid of the qualities that made the duo’s early stuff so wonderfully cinematic. Of course, this is a score, designed to be heard as you watch the scenes it soundtracks. But if you’re going to release a score as a standalone thing, it should be able to, well, stand alone. Moments do – instrumental ‘Enrolment’ is dark, stark and almost krautrocky, while closer ‘Graduation’ lilts with beautiful melancholy – yet, devoid of its context, it all feels somewhat banal.
