'It sounds like Sigur Rós getting hurt in a free jazz boot camp'
As Asobi Seksu have been proving with their exhilarating sonic sheen, there’s a good way to shoegaze in 2007. Well, there’s also a bad way, and that’s the path LA dreampop wannabes The Autumns have chosen to follow. Although they’ve worked with former Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde in the past (this is their fourth album) his subtle approach is lacking on the heavy-handed ‘Fake Noise From A Box Of Toys’. The wobbly single ‘Boys’ is indicative of the problem – it sounds like Sigur Rós getting hurt in a free jazz boot camp. The unfortunately named singer Matthew Kelly sounds less like he’s filled with the spirit of Kevin Shields and more like
Chris Martin’s weedy brother. The one who’s scared of spiders and kissing girls. Only on ‘Night Music’ do things approach the majesty of previous albums, but it’s too little too late.
