The Besnard Lakes

Here’s another example of someone shamelessly reissuing an old album when a group unexpectedly breaks through into the mainstream. Usually, it’s nothing but a money-spinning exercise. There is no need to be afraid here, however, because the debut album by Montreal’s The Besnard Lakes – creators of one of 2007’s best albums, ‘The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse’ – certainly stands up next to its younger cousin. Reassuringly, Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas’ influences were pretty similar three years ago. Ten-minute opener ‘Skyscraper Girls’ recalls Grandaddy at their grandest, while the thumping ‘This Thing’ is space-rock at half-speed. With Lasek and Goreas playing everything themselves in their studio, there’s

a real homegrown charm to ‘Volume 1’. As if you’ve just discovered that two of your mates recorded an amazing space-rock album in their bedroom, but didn’t tell you about it.
