Album review: The Blackout – ‘The Best In Town’

This south Wales sextet blend the essences of McFly, Faith No More and Topman to create that virulent, yet bizarrely popular, strain of music that is an unholy cross between emo and nu metal, but with floppier fringes. Sticking to the formula followed by fellow Welsh emo posers Lostprophets and Funeral For A Friend, the generic metalcore verses and overblown choruses are all present and correct (‘Shut The Fuck Uppercut’), as is the obligatory break-up ballad (‘Silent When We Speak’). They’ve also made good use of comedy track titles (‘We’re Going To Hell… So Bring The Sunblock’) as well as the old favourite fist-pumping phrase “Woah-oh” (‘Save Our Selves (The Warning)’). And all delivered in a faux-American accent.
