The Orwells – ‘Other Voices EP’

A dark, smart and thrilling debut

If garage-punks were into prize-giving rather than flinging themselves around bars, Chicago teens The Orwells would win gold for ‘Other Voices’. One of the best tracks of the year, it’s a rollercoaster ride through messy nights out, making the headfuckery of adolescence sound desirable. Sandwiched between that and the rampant ‘Mallrats’ though are two songs about the complicated parts of youth. ‘Head’ finds frontman Mario Cuomo lost in romantic confusion, while ‘Blood Bubbles’ plays out a morbid fascination with suicide. It’s a dark, smart and thrilling debut.
