Wonder Villains – ‘Rocky’

Derry four-piece The Wonder Villains certainly look like they’re having fun on their Tumblr, goofily beaming down from bunk beds. The band’s debut album is similarly chirpy: an unashamedly poppy rush of sugary synths that continually grasps for melodies that belong in a primary school disco. They namecheck Weezer on ‘33’ and have toured with They Might Be Giants, but stylistically the cartoonish bouncing of ‘Blonde’ and ‘Zola’ should be filed closer to Katy Perry. That’s a disservice to the ‘Firework’ singer, though; ‘Rocky’ lacks the pop nous to succeed.
