If there’s one good thing about ‘Late Night Shopping’, it’s that it’s graced with the gift of subtlety that Mancunian bands are not generally famed for. Instead, what Autokat are aiming for is simmering and experimental with pristine guitars and spectral soundscapes. What they actually achieve is an experience so bland it’s like licking a piece of felt, and if it’s tunes you want, look elsewhere. There is the odd infectious northern soul groove – see the chugging of ‘Innocence’ – proving Autokat are at their best when not trying so hard. Elsewhere, you might hear a hint of Wire or Television. But for long, dull periods Autokat are just an impotent Editors. Maybe subtlety’s not such a good thing, after all.
