The Railway Inn, Winchester, March 2
If Captain Phoenix’s frontman Ben Burrows seems a touch familiar, then it’s because he’s not only the spitting image of his big bro Andy, Razorlight’s charming drummer, but also because he’s seemingly stolen the larynx of Joe Cocker. He’s somehow melded said voice box to his own Hampshire-raised lungs and morphed into the kind of saucy bluesman who can relieve girls of their knickers with just one gravelly yelp. Part-Southern rock and part-smash’n’grab party punk, songs such as ‘Pistols And Hearts’, ‘Over And Out’ and ‘Blackheath’ are fully formed indie smashers – scrummy, strummy numbers that get the band’s ardent hometown fans leaping from the stage.
