Often, a string section is the sticking plaster that one applies to cover up awful songs. Really they should be banned for a while, just so to cull bog-rubbish songwriters eveywhere. But ‘Mathematics’ scrapes a win through its sashaying elegance and whirls of giddy violin, even if the singer does sound like Gavin Rossdale. Which is obviously not a recommendation
