Client – ‘Loser Friendly’

Electropop group return with new members and accessible tunes

Mixing shiny electropop with faceless bureaucracy, Client’s fifth album finds group mastermind Client A (Kate Holmes, formerly of Creation act Technique and married to Alan McGee) joined by new vocalist Client N (Nicole Thomas), following the transfer of predecessor Client B (Dubstar’s Sarah Blackwood). The opening track’s soundbite politics (“You rule by whose authority?”) see Client revive ’80s sloganeering for the present day, but much of what ensues is far more playful. From the overtly steamy pulse of ‘XXX Action’ to the heavenly glide of ‘The Shining Path’ and the robotic wordplay of ‘Artificial’, their sound palette is broad and the hit rate high. Its skewed interpretation of pop makes ‘Authority’ Client’s most accessible and enjoyable record yet.
