Album review: Depeche Mode

Sounds Of The Universe

While it’s obvious what to do when you’re too old to rock (buy a stool, invest in an acoustic, learn how to play ‘In The Pines’), there’s no real career path for synth-pop acts like Depeche Mode to follow. After all, they can’t play unplugged gigs, can they? On their 12th album and 29 years into their career, the Basildon bondage boys have switched down a gear by hunting for vintage synths and drum machines on eBay, imagining an alternative past where technology froze at some point round 1990, but their desire to make futuristic music didn’t. So the album doesn’t sound old but there’s a refreshing warmth emanating from these fizzing and burbling Moogs and Parker Steinway keyboards. On ‘Spacewalker’ they channel the South Pacific exotica of Martin Denny via
cult ’80s Japanese synth sorts Yellow Magic Orchestra, but it’s not all like some time capsule discovered in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. There’s the statutory techno spiritual stomper ‘Wrong’ and the shoegazey ‘Come Back’, which flashes Mary Chain guitar and the electro psych of MGMT. They don’t always get the balance right between new and old, but this suggests an exciting old age.

I just received my copy in the post this morning, can't wait to get it home and turn it up!

This could very well be one of DM's finest albums ever! It was initially a bit of a slow-burner but with Dave Gahan's ever-growing super vocal talents combined with the 'unusual' selection of older synths and Depeche Mode's uniquely brilliant control over all sounds (of the Universe!) this is a masterpiece. 10 out of 10.

I've been listening to this pretty much non-stop since Monday. As ever with DM its not immediately arresting but after a few listens it just clicks. Full of win, as I believe the kids say.

this album is amazing! The boxset is a must for every die hard devote. The 4 extra tracks are really great, the dvd is cool, .... and the demo's *swoon*.

I wish I could feel the love for this album but I just can't! After several listens it's just not very good. Playing the Angel was A LOT better both lyrically and musically and compared with earlier albums, Sounds isn't one of their better efforts. It's just really bland; hopefully they'll do something a bit more interesting that carries on the creativity witnessed on Playing for the next album!

As mentioned by other posters, this is an album that needs a few listens to be fully appreciated. Non-mode sales will suffer with the absence of a radio-friendly lead single like 'Precious', but I think it's a really strong album that far more consistent than previous release, 'Playing the Angel'.

Guys, this is quite simply an awesome album. For anyone who cannot get into this album I suggest the following. Turn your mobile off, and the telly. Put some quality earphones on and listen to this album loud but not too loud, with your eyes closed. The layering of the music is superb and Dave Gahans voice has never sounded better. The first two tracks, "in chains" and "hole to feed" are just sublime. with in chains the best intro song i think I have heard on any album. True, there are too many tracks on this album. Had they reduced it to the 9 great tracks on the album i honestly think they would be very close to violator. "Jezebel" I have to admit is appallingly bad. Sorry Martin, I know your singing is superb but honestly what were you thinking!! Probably the worst DM song made!!. The other songs they should have taken out are "little soul" "spacewalker" - pointless filler, and "come back". "perfect" is again a fantastically layered song and "corrupt" a hard nosed belter. Please please give this album time and if you take my advice and listen with earphones you will feel the music
