Dodgy – ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’

An apologetic shrug back into the spotlight

One day, [a]Dodgy[/a] may go down as a guilty pleasure of the Britpop years – for all the amiable camper van buffoonery, the likes of ‘In A Room’ were deceptively savage, Who-esque minor indie-rock classics. You can’t blame them for coming out of retirement in the current climate of mid-’90s nostalgia, but ‘Stand Upright…’, with its heavy accent on country flavours and gentle pastoralia, is an apologetic shrug back into the spotlight. Only on the thundering ‘Raggedstone Hill’ do they visit former glories. Sadly, it’s possible to forget the rest of it while you are actually listening to it.
