Efterklang

Under Giant Trees

Global warming is bad news for polar bears, but for gloomy, orchestral post-rockers, it’s a godsend. Bands like Mogwai and Godspeed must be sitting pretty with the profits from soundtracking TV documentaries about environmental catastrophe. Efterklang (reverberation in Danish) should expect a call from Discovery soon as this five-track mini-album, recorded with additional brass and strings and the Dubbelgänger Men’s Choir, is the sound of glaciers melting and forests eroding into desert. ‘Under Giant Trees’ contains moments of vast, desolate beauty, but overall it lacks the magic of contemporaries Sigur Rós. At its most ponderous, it makes you want to switch off the scenes of baby seals and turn to World’s Wildest Police Videos.
