Elbow : Newborn

A single of such magnificent flight and depth that it darkens the skies above most other modern British guitar groups. The only mark against it is that it was actually one of the singles of [I]last year, when it was originally released. And at over at seven minutes long it's not an obvious contender for radio airtime, but these are mere details. This is a boldly ornate song about love and mortality, a song that twists and turns majestically in search of melodic answers to the big questions. It's Guy Garvey's frazzled, pitch perfect howl at the mortal moon and it lends the musical adjective 'epic' a much needed coat of credibility.
