Call The Shots

Not Girls Aloud’s greatest ever single but trying to better ‘Biology’, ‘No Good Advice’ and ‘Something Kinda Ooooh’ is no easy task. Still, ‘Call The Shots’, with its surging chorus revealing just a hint of vulnerability, is comfortably smarter and more sophisticated than most of the cloggers on this page. If New Young Pony Club had released this we’d be creaming ourselves. That’s not to make the mistake of several sweaty-palmed broadsheet hacks and laud Girls Aloud as anything more than steely-eyed Xenomania avatars. Give us Lou Hayter over Nicola “just build more prisons” Roberts any day.
