8 / 10 If Alison Goldfrapp ever was the girl next door, she obviously moved out to enrol in the Studio 54 School Of Disco Diva-ship some time ago. Here she commands – no, demands – attention. Continuing the dancefloor-friendly grooves of 2003’s Brit-nominated ’Black Cherry’, it may not be hard to isolate the streaks of numerous ’80s electro-heroes here (Gary Numan, New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark), but Goldfrapp inject more than enough of the 21st century into what they do to avoid being thoughtless rip-off merchants. And in fact, it’s during these increasingly familiar moments of aural eroticism that Alison hits the strongest sonic G spot. The purring, T-Rex infatuated tones of recent single ‘Ooh La La’ are a case in point, and if ‘Ride A White Horse’ doesn’t get the blood rushing to all the right areas then you should declare yourself celibate immediately. Suave, sophisticated and sexy as hell, Goldfrapp have the musical know-how to awaken the darkest desires in women, men and Morrisseys alike.
