Aussies Howling Bells may look like the ‘evil’ gang that The Long Blondes would have to battle in a bubblegum-gore version of Grease, but it’s not all menace and doom here. Above the chugging death-march BRMC rhythm, there is sensitivity. Crystal guitars pirouette while vespertine ice-goth Juanita Stein coos like a black scarf caught in the wind about loads of things she doesn’t believe in. How people this tasteful and melancholy are born in a place where bungee jumping is considered high art is a mystery.
