Jane Weaver

Cherlokalate (Bird)

Jane Weaver

6 / 10 A child of Manchester, Jane Weaver is the sound of Cat Power if she’d grown up next door to Oasis, stealing their Beatles records and outshining them at the school Christmas concert. This, her latest long player, is all fuzzy alt.folk, brimming with passion and sorrow. On the exquisite ‘Shoulder Seasons’ her solitary guitar chimes out with chilling clarity over the purring piano accompaniment. ‘It’s Not Over Yet’ is the album’s genuine shiver-down-your-spine moment, a dark ballad, with delicate string harmonies piercing through the solemn and beautiful piano melody. Granted, this record isn’t likely to provoke any chuckles, but it wears its misery well.
