Kings Of Leon

Only By The Night

They’ve never exactly been over-burdened by insight. “We’ve figured out the formula,” asserted Nathan Followill when his band spoke to NME a few weeks back. “The harder you work, the more successful you get.” Only in the realm of the Kings could this count as scientific discovery; you mean packing out the Milton Keynes Thunderdome might demand more than a suitable supply of plectrums? Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Followill...

If they claim they weren’t trying before, it’s only because their prodigious talent always meant everything came easy. ‘Not trying’ yielded two rave-reviewed records full of what we used to dub ‘Southern-fried Strokes’. And trying? That spat out the monolithic ‘Because Of The Times’: its wagon-paced, chorus-free seven-minute opener ‘Knocked Up’ an instant signifier they knew exactly what they were doing. And if its second half couldn’t quite match the opening force of ‘Charmer’, ‘McFearless’ and their ilk, it didn’t stop them from quietly becoming a band apart. Without ever achieving a Top 10 single, they conquered Glastonbury on grassroots fan-power more than fashionability. Now, with the release of their fourth album, they’re widely expected to use all that talent to vault to genuine greatness.

So many assumptions. It’s natural to assume it’s going to sound stadium-filling. And it does. It’s natural to assume their sonic trajectory is now locked into a path that’s closer to Editors than Creedence. That’s true too. It’s also naturally been assumed, partly on the strength of the pre-release cuts, that this is to be their magnum opus, their ‘Transformer’/‘Revolver’/‘The Bends’ bulwark against time. Wrong. Sad as it is to relate, the Kings have once again made only half of the album of the year. Like their last, ‘Only By The Night’ is front-loaded with world-beaters but then gradually ebbs back to more interchangeable moments. More than ever its strengths, when it succeeds, later become its weaknesses. It tries a mite too hard.

The key to its lush, pop-framed sonics could be in Caleb’s talk of how he wrote some of the record’s best cuts while under the influence of pain medication, prescribed after a scuffle with Nathan. This is a record that comes ringed in a sedative halo. At its best, it’s mirrored in the woozy, underwater-love sensibility that informs the magisterial likes of ‘Closer’, ‘Manhattan’ and ‘17’. But the flipside, a sense-numbed dissociation from empty anthemics, is what makes ‘Only By The Night’ sometimes seem underwrought and occasionally ploddy.

Not that the opening trilogy offers any inkling: as a declaration of intent, ‘Closer’ may be the best thing they’ve ever done and possibly the grandest first-shot since Interpol’s ‘Untitled’. Within seconds, a familiar strand of two-note ‘Because Of The Times’ guitar is joined by a sonic glitch that’d probably sound more at home in the BBC Radiophonic Workshop than a Nashville studio, soon swaddled in a second guitar so effects-laden it’s almost shoegaze. There’s that familiar compressed snare-drum gut-punch, and then… Caleb gasping about Rapture, all while the musical tide rises around him, through a sublime, foreboding-filled Southern Gothic overture.

On to this they build a profound opening trilogy: the tank-like “crucified USA” churn of ‘Crawl’, the extraordinary telescopic chorus of ‘Sex On Fire’. Then ‘Use Somebody’ takes a turn for the Kelly Clarkson. On its own, its cresting lonely-road shape makes it easily the best ’80s power ballad of 2008. But it foreshadows the way the Kings, who we’d always assumed knew exactly where the line was, may be in danger of mistaking bluster for brilliance. The more countrified ‘Manhattan’ and louche teenie-loving ‘17’ succeed, but the soft-rocking ‘Revelry’ and the almost Verve-like oceanic rumble of ‘Notion’ pass unremarkably. Criminally, ‘I Want You’ is a mid-tempo plodder three tracks from the end – right where the stratospheric burn-up moment should be. ‘Be Somebody’ scuds through its verses only to fall into bluster in the chorus. As an outro, ‘Cold Desert’ would like to be their ‘The End’ or ‘I Am The Resurrection’, the big, caterwauling extended fuck-off cherry on their cake, but ends up anaemic. There’s a false coda and some loose guitar wigging but no real sense of urgency. It’s the sound of the Kings crowning themselves and forgetting to invite everyone else to their party.

Of course ‘Only By The Night’ will still make them massive. As they gaze upon megaplex after enormodome this autumn, though, they’ll have to content themselves with the knowledge they’re merely one of the best bands of our times. True immortality – that’s been postponed.

sex on fire = dakota. i have this album and i turned it off after 4 songs. your saying these r the best. should i bother with the rest?

Sep 19, 2008

how weird that kings weakest album will also be their biggest! i still like it, but where are the rockers like charmer and 4 kicks??

Siluad

Sep 19, 2008

Massively overrated. Personally I preferred it when they didn't try, Youth and Young Manhood still is their pinnacle achievement. This album is a slight improvement on the last pile of shite they turned out but still only just

Sep 22, 2008

True the first 4 songs are the pick of the bunch but the rest are quality too! Be Somebody and Cold Desert end the album perfectly Saying this is their worst album but going to be the most commercially successful is just a way of saying "I'm dont like them any more because they are popular and I have to maintain my indie cool but at least i listened to them when they were cool"

do i care if theyll never make anything as joyous as 'king of the rodeo' ever again?no, ill love whatever they do. so i give it ten without even hearing it.

It's definitely a step down from last year's Because Of The Times. I wonder if they released this too soon to capitalise on the festival successes of the summer?

vonman

Sep 22, 2008

By the sounds of it they have churned out another ''Because of the Times''. I agree with Siluad, ''Youth and Young Manhood'' and elements of ''Aha Shake Heartbreak'' will never be topped. Saw them on Jools Holland last night and was yearning for something like Red Morning Light but no, we got On Call.

That was a good review, the album has its moments but there are some very dull tracks on there. They have somewhat rushed into this album to hit the hammer whilst it is still hot and it worked, i mean a number one single, plenty of workable singles on the album too, yet it lacks an excitement which the previous albums have. Without going into much detail, the album has alot of filler which doesnt really capture what the kings of leon are all about. I mean, a hell of alot of people are going to buy this cd expecting 11 solid tracks or the chart hoppers will want 11 'sex on fires', im afraid disapointment will be the only outcome.I never expected to write anything bad about this band either....

James2222159: I probably will listen to the rest of the album, but at the time of reading this review and having seen the irony in the nme sayin the first few tracks are the best and me not actually enjoying these tracks, i decided to turn it off, im a KoL fan iv seen them 5 times. at the time i wasnt enjoying listening to the crock of shite that was entering my ears so i switched off. they are entering into territory, hinted at by the last album to be fair, that really doesnt make we want to like them as much. principally this involves - over produced U2 sounding songs, which last too long and go nowhere. another problem with KoL is their appeal to women. any band with more women fans than male fans instantly become Bon Jovi to me. you may mistake this as a rant against KoL in general but its not. 2 classic albums and an ok 3rd album isnt bad going. i just dont like U2 or bands that try to be U2.

Im slightly annoyed that someone who turned it off after 4 songs can comment????? This album, to me, is just as good, but becouse its different people arnt sure........Ok I admit there is no Charmer or Four kicks on this album but its still an album with 11 amazing songs, by a pretty awesome band!!! They took a chance and I think it works!

Sep 22, 2008

7/10 bullshit just hear the singles they're amazing, the fact here its that I cant find any other fulfilling band like KOL these guys are really far from so many other UK bands, maybe you are underestimating their prowess & not appreciate them as the greatest American band for the decade!!!!

great album!!!

Sep 23, 2008

Not heard the whole album yet but from what i'v heard so far its gonna be a classic. People said the last album was a long way from aha shake heartbreak and youth and young manhood but tracks like charmer and mcfearless would not have been out of place on either of the first 2 albums nor would crawl from only by the night. The fact is KOL can write all types of great songs and produce great albums and it just so happens that sex on fire has helped the whole world realise that.

Sep 23, 2008

I can't believe people aren't really liking this album! I was a massive fan of the first two albums, but I really didn't like the third album at all. However, with this, I feel they're back on track. It is superb. It's anthemic and epic. The opening song is one of the best I've heard on any album. Definitely up there for me along with Foals, Lightspeed Champion, Elbow, Crystal Castles, and Blood Red Shoes as one of the best albums out this year so far.

I think you find with most kings albums is it takes a couple of listens, u find your instant singles but eventually you always find that every song is brilliant in its own unique way. There weakest album will always be aha unfortunately however their most beautiful a brilliant song is on it (milk). I think their new found fame is well overdue and this "too cool to like them now their big is ridiculous". Kings will be one of them bands that will always be loved by every person who likes all sorts of different genres because of his raw voice and their perfection in all of their work.

James2222159

I think the NME has got it right with this review theres some good tunes but near the end it all goes quite bland. I wanted some more rocking songs like crawl in there.

You've got to be kidding me. 7 out of 10. The first time I listened to this album it hooked me absolutely into its mellowed out emotional southern blues. I didn;t emerge from the almost drug like state until the final chords of cold desert (oh and definitely don;t get the deluxe version with frontier city as the closing track, this album NEEDS to close on cold desert). It isn't KoL's first 2 albums, and, you know what, it doesn;t matter. They made those albums and they'll always have and, on the basis of they're stadium gigs, love to play those earlier songs. On the download charts the other albums are back in the top20, if not top10, now again! This album is perfectly constructed. There is no possible reason they would have put in a "stratospheric burn-up" in place of “I want you”. The structure is designed for the first 5 tracks to be the high, and then slowly seep into a beautiful embracing and sometimes sad come-down over the rest of the album until the final track drifts into the ether. Every single track on this album deserves to be there. The slightly weaker moments are “17” and

I think it must be the stylists fault.(Obviously).......Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak....pure genius, more fun than a Butlins holidayhttp://www.nme.com/photos/571/3/the-kings-of-leonBecause of the Times and Only by the Night both struggle to rekindle the fun they used to have and instead indulge in self-absorbtionhttp://www.nme.com/photos/571/4/the-kings-of-leon

Good honest review. NME sometimes has its bandwagoning to blame for missing the target of truth over expectation but this one is spot on. I hate to say anything bad about KoL as they seemed so effortlessly to produce 3 albums that were increasingly difficult to fault. But having raised the bar so high, they have failed to take the time to finish these songs - perhaps in an attempt to ride their own wave while it's at its peak - and fallen short of their standard. The tragedy is that most of these songs start off sounding interesting but die down again without finding a spark.

I SO agree with the critics that I read up there. I found this album bland, boring and commercial. I mean, we know that they want to conquer America (and they will certainly do that, with this shit) but, hey, where is the creativeness, the fun, the good beats? What a shame, they were good, but now they are infatuated.Good luck, KOL, I may end up selling my tix for the December gig at the 02 on ebay. This is how bad I think that 4th album is...

4kingkas- your comment about KOL becoming like Bon Jovi due to having a large female fan base is ignorant. I am female and I have become a big fan of KOL in only the past few months, after seeing them play at V festival. I couldn't see them, but I could hear them and that is what caught me - what they sound like (and I had hear them before, but it was hearing them live when I became most impressed and a fan). You are implying that women only like bands if they are good looking but give us some credit we can like bands due to the sound. Regards the album the first part of the album is deffo stronger than the end, but it is still better than most of the pap in the charts!

I think it' s a good album, but nothing special. Aha Shake Heartbreak and Youth And Young Manhood were much better. Ayway, "Use Somebody" is the best song... I really like it!

I live in Ireland and DJ in Dublin, I went off the kings f Leon when idiot ambervrombie wearing student douche bags started bugging me for the kings of Leon, and in the last 2 albums they really have lost the soul of the band in a lot of ways, I miss the mystery of the first 2 albums and the freedom they had of not caring about making hits

Disappointing album. The first 3 tracks are good, but after that I kind of switched off. Doesn't stand up against 'Because of the Times' or the first two albums, by a long way imho.

Oct 6, 2008

Bit pissed off with this album. Although it is good it's heading towards the mainstream that the last album threatened to. A bit over produced and not got the emotion of the other 3 albums.Add to that the fact i can't get tickets to see them anymore as all of a sudden every man and his dog are the biggest KOL fans. I've saw them 8 times including festival appearances and now i have to look to ebay to buy overpriced tickets as they head down the road of radio friendly unit shifters.

I agree with the comments of wasted_time, they have rushed into this album and it shows. There are still glimmers of Kings' genius and after many listens, it starts to fit together. Still not their best, but they are masters at making me feel glad to be alive.

I don't know what most of these people have been listening too, it's a great album throughout, i really don't think there is a weak song on it, i always have to listen to the whole thing twice because by the time it gets to the last few songs i don't want it to end, i would say this album is sexy and very much on fire!

MahadyTheLips

Oct 16, 2008

when i heard that the followhills claim that this album would rock harder i pictured a "black thumbnail laced" album full of grungy riffs and explosive drumming. and the waiter brings out soft spoken, light sounding album with a sex on fire and crawl topping. rock harder it didnt. it tasted soft, and stil managed to be quite enjoyable, just not the magnum opus i'm sure many of expected from the KOL this time around. looks like we're still yet to see the Kings "Joshua Tree" spill into the record books and personally i'll still be listening to them enthusiastically by the time that happens.

dee_real_mccoy

Oct 17, 2008

I have to disagree with alot of the comments I have been reading about this album, I am in no way a major Kings of Leon fan, I will listen to The Bucket or Mollys Chamber now and again but I think this album is amazing.I find every song on this so addictive, however special mentions goes to Cold Desert, I listen to this song and I can think about nothing else, it makes me stop and think which nowadays not many songs can.Quite possibly one of my favourite albums of the past 10 years maybe of all time, I know its strange to make such a statement already but every song is amazing, the band are so focused on making good music rather than making more money than everyone else which shows they are a bit different

deanohmfc

Oct 17, 2008

this is quite possibly the best album of the decade and cant believe some of the comments or the 7/10 either ..every single song is a song you can listen to over and over and still love it. this album is just on fire !!

Booseph

Oct 21, 2008

this album is their best by far. there are no weak songs at all. it should have got more than 7 out of 10, more like 9/10.there's still a lot more to come from this band, we still haven't seen the best of them :)

Foxy_roxy

Oct 22, 2008

Some people cannot move on! I understand why some Kings fans from Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak times are a little perturbed by this album. Ok so KOL have become more mainstream in their appeal and their sound is no longer as raw - but this album is still immense in it's own right. Only By The Night is a progression in their sound, KOL have become more mature and better with age. If we were still listening to Taper Jean Girl and Molly's Chambers esq tunes we'd be complaining that the band hadn't moved on. This album is pure class and those who only listened tothe first few tunes - shame on you. The best was still to come in Use Somebody and 17. If you want to be musical stalwarts - stick, the rest of us can enjoy the continues reign on the Kings! Thank you and goodnight.

first of all i want to say something about what was said about the female fans. i have been a fan since youth and young manhood and i know quite a few others that are the same. also personally i never really thought because of the times was all that good...it had its moments definitely but comparedto the first 2 its just not as good...i think that only by the night is much better than because of the times...iv never really gotten past track 10 on because of the times...not that only by the night is kol at their best im not a fan of 17 at all...well actually mainly the chorus...but the first 5 and last 3 are really very good...the only thing is that if they were making Y&YMH 3 or 4 ye would be saying why havent they moved on...believe me i dont lik spending over 100€ for a 40€ ticket more than any one else..(they shud really be doin more than one show in ireland north and south)...but i am glad theyre gettin the admiration they deserve...

Oct 22, 2008

My mum thinks this is an outstanding album. That's pretty much all you need to know about how much this lacks on the 'rocking' side. To be fair, until you hit track 8 you've got a good album but from then on you may as well put something else on. Closer and Sex on Fire are the top tracks.

Nothing worse than hearing music snobs slagging a former favourite band simply because they have gotten "big" and are therefore no longer "cool". When you grow up, you'll realise the absurdity of that.

matt_the_crib

Oct 29, 2008

Fazza1970, your a fool, its not because they got big! Listen to their first 2 albums and realise, their REAL fans frustration! I much preferred it when you had no clue what Caleb was saying

Matt_the_crib; Spot on mate. KOL became a stadium rock band after the third album. Over produced wank. Back to your roots for the Fifth please boys.

This album has some absolutely sublime songs. Closer, my favourite is sexy and captivating, drawing you in like a lover Crawl has the hard, gritty, dirty sound that is regonisable, Sex on Fire is the luring tone of sex that is familiar to the KoL and Cold Dessert shows a beguiling depth to Caleb's talent as a song writer. 17 is horrible. The other songs like Revelry, I Want You and Be Somebody are good but not greats. True this album does not pack the same musical punch as previous offerings but like others have said every band progresses in different ways and have to explore new sounds for themselves. You can't expect every album they produce to sound the same. Most important is that Caleb has a beautifully raw and engrossing singing voice which is still there and I love listening to. KoL are writing songs of a high calibre in a market of over produced shit that we see thrown in our faces everyday and are one of the best band to see live which is what appriciating music is about. It's not a perfect album, but how many are. They deserve their success because they are an

I love the Kings of Leon. I saw them in concert way back in 02. I loved their first three albums and i'm a die hard fan. However, this album is weak. I mean really weak. I was so bored after 5 tracks I almost shut it offhowever I listened to the whole thing and I still think this is their worst album. Sad as it is, the boys are mistaking weak music for brilliance, which is scary

Muscle--museum

Dec 12, 2008

Nowadays i feel as though inconsistency is plaguing every potentially outstanding album. Of course, one can listen to the mind-blowers and then switch off but if you're like me, to listen to a good album start to finish, and to absorb it's message, holds the same level of satisfaction as reading a good book. KOL have hit it big, and to me, the damage only goes as far as the embarrassment of hearing sex on fire in every dance-laden night club in the country. Not great but better than most.

Sambones1985

Dec 17, 2008

You hit on the head with this one. the KOL had me going with their early stuff: Youth and Young Manhood was a time capsule back to the sex pistols, just plain raw riffs that made you want to raise hell and howl along with Caleb's mourning/whiskey soaked drawl. The follow up album, Aha Shake, might be even better... but this one, despite Crawl, the album plain sucked. Crawl's a great song, but the rest jump on this whiney, almost techno 21st century Bono, U2 bogus hog wash. Hopefully, they'll redeem themselves. If not, I wont be too upset. They've had a great run, producing three excellent albums.
