You can almost hear MTV rejoicing in the background. Florida's Limp Bizkit could be tailor-made for permanent video rotation: just rough enough for MTV to show how 'cutting edge' they can be, just rap enough to attract fans in enormous comedy trousers but all with enough choruses to avoid scaring middle America.
Moreover, their trendy rock/rap credentials are perfect. Limp Bizkit count DJ Lethal of House Of Pain among their ranks and this second album includes guest appearances from the Wu-Tang Clan's Method Man and members of Stone Temple Pilots, Korn and Primus. But, as everyone knows, celeb back-slapping events are rarely either musically productive or even very interesting to anyone not involved.
Such is the case with Limp Bizkit. About ten tracks too long, 'Significant Other' is painfully hip - a bit Cypress Hill, a bit Rage Against The Machine, a bit like an immediate route to a headache. They badly want to be credible but desperately want to repeat the 1.5 million-selling success of their debut album and the result is a muddle of hardcore hip-hop and limp radio-friendly choruses.
The guys at MTV may be impressed. But we aren't.
