Little Boots – ‘Business Pleasure’ EP

Victoria Hesketh's comeback is cliche-ridden and mundane

Alongside Florence Welch and La Roux, Little Boots was everywhere in 2009. But after Top Five album ‘Hands’, Victoria Hesketh faded. This comeback is an EP of “DIY pop” produced by New York synth upcomer Com Truise and the not-so-DIY Jas Shaw of Simian Mobile Disco and Chris Carmouche, a 2004 Grammy winner for Outkast’s ‘Speakerboxxx/The Love Below’. Hesketh, who now has her own label, wrote in The Times about feeling inspired last year, but these songs are anything but. On ‘Pretty Tough’ she sings: “You think I’m pretty/But I can be pretty tough”. Elsewhere, the tired structures on ‘Taste It’ and ‘Heroine’ are crushingly mundane. Relying on cliché and noughties nostalgia, this is a dancefloor-to-smoking area cattle prod.
