Their first gig in four years has brought all the old-school noise-freaks out of the woodwork for a nostalgic evening of sonic brutality. And it’s good to see that the ‘Flesh are still as uncompromising – and unlistenable – as ever.

Set opener ‘I, Me, Mine’ sounds like the Prodigy drowning in acid, but its relentless drum’n’bass rhythms coupled with frontman Justin Broadrick‘s tortured screams make Liam Howlett‘s crew sound more like Steps.

And have we mentioned the guitars yet? Because this is where [a]Godflesh[/a] prove they’re head and shoulders above the rest of their dance/noise contemporaries. They’re played like instruments of torture by the master of the dungeon, rather than a traditional heavy metal band. It’s the sound of rusty nails and bleeding wrists.
