Robert Newman, former comedian, has just come onstage to introduce [a]Electrelane[/a], in Spanish, dressed as a binman. And just as for Robert refuse collection seems to be the new novel, so it develops that drones are the new fanzines, a vague kitschy cool the new art riot, and post-rock the new riot grrrl.

Oh yes. Holding the twin candles of inspiration and initiative against the darkness of mild incompetence, [a]Electrelane[/a] emerge to a sustained electronic chord with an air of mild insurrection. They are, after all, making bold inroads into a genre in which being a male in one’s late-20s is pretty much an entry-level requirement.

Someone alert Tortoise: [a]Electrelane[/a] (Verity, Debbie, Emma and Rachel) are young women. They look a bit Mary Quant, a bit [I]Blowup[/I]. They sound like John Barry being played by Huggy Bear, and in their successful opportuning of the two does their magic lie. A bit like Jean-Luc Godard, the whole cut-and-paste shebang only intermittently makes sense, but when they hit on their new single, ‘Film Music’, the deal is done. They are Stereolab without the boopy-doopy bing-bong, and all is ultimately well.

“[I]L’art est inutile[/I],” (“Art is useless”) decrees their slide show, as the group troop offstage.

Art might have to look out for itself. Its end is the new beginning.
