In many ways, [a]Spearmint[/a] offer a guided sonic tour of some of the most archetypal sounds of the last few decades. They launch into ‘A Trip Into Space’ and its sample proves to be the stuff of ’90s Ibiza house anthems. ‘Sweeping The Nation’, meanwhile, conjures the spirit (if not the power) of northern soul by filching liberally from Dobie Gray’s classic ‘Out On The Floor’. Then we wormhole through to Britpop for the Pulp glam-rattle of new single ‘We’re Going Out’ and the Rialto-bothering ‘You Are Still My Brother’.
And, amazingly, they make it all seem like a great idea. Despite being a total C20 throwback – pale blokes with guitars, specs, dreadful fringes, y’know, real indie – Spearmint retain an integrity and melodic grace which you gain from more than simply having a great record collection. All that they learn from their many influences they channel directly into honest and defiantly idiosyncratic tunes like ‘A Week Away’, never concerned with drawing attention to what good taste they have, always striving to make this sound their own.
They’re standing on the shoulders of giants. But they’re not wobbling or losing their balance, they’re reaching for the stars.
