This is an NY Cool that the empty fashion sluts will find a little hard to copy...
A full 18 months before Strokes mania, Oneida were putting on messy parties around Brooklyn, wreaking a fine noise and causing the kind of chaos that’s made NYC cool again. Tonight, London gets a belated taste.
Three songs in, drummer Kid Millions has already puked on his kit, synth-player Bobby Matador has shredded eardrums with piercing white noise, and 7ft-tall guitarist Papa Crazy has trashed a malfunctioning mic. Over the next 40 minutes Oneida beat us senseless with blistering rock’n’roll, exuding a demented cool throughout. ‘Doin Business In Japan’ sounds like New York Dolls playing four different songs at once while ‘Primanti Bros’ brings in droning Suicide synths and frantic rhythms. Not easy listening, but undeniably impressive.
The chaos closes with an empty stage, five minutes of blank noise and the knowledge that Oneida are on a mission to reclaim rock’n’roll for the forces of freakdom. This is an NY Cool that the empty fashion sluts will find a little hard to copy.
