When the headlining band and their support outnumber the people who’ve come to see them, there’s something terribly wrong.
Bleached-haired Vulcan, Rory O’Keefe is cradling the mic stand like it’s his only friend – and it seems that isn’t too far from the truth, since his feyboy preening dramatics aren’t having much effect on anyone. Not that he’s bothered as he launches into new single [a]Skin[/a], all pseudo-androgyny and wannabe Molko ambiguous lyrics.
Most of the time, The Ultra Montanes are like a photocopied Subcircus: they have the glamorous sheen and elastic vocals, but lack their ingenuity and intrigue. At one point on ‘Ageing Starlet’ they sound eerily like Bis fronted by Feargal Sharkey. And that’s downright frightening.
