Macy Gray
Why Didn't You Call Me?(Epic)
Some people hate Macy Gray; but some people hate sex, champagne and sunshine. This is the throaty pop-soul diva's 987th release from her quadruple platinum debut 'On How Life Is', but the cupboard is still far from bare on this rollicking saga of thwarted lust and romantic disappointment. It's nothing but a boozy, juicy, 12-bar blues swagger but somehow the Macy voice, like Bjork's, can transform the most sketchy ditty into a mile-high tidal wave of passion and celebration. She may be ticking off a one-night stand who never called back, but this is still a fantastic party groove, more rhythm than blues, and positively dripping with libidinous longing.
The Black Eyed Peas mix is also worth hearing, dirtying up the beats and adding an answer rap from the hapless lover in question which adapts Macy's own rhymes from her previous smash hit 'I Try'. Resistance is futile.
