If the rocket fuel of the LA music scene is infamy, then few come more notorious than Tommy Lee. He's had the obligatory drug problems and jail stretch, is married to Pamela Anderson and, with her, starred in the world's most celebrated home movie. So it's easy to overlook the fact that he spent 16 years drumming in Mvtley Cr|e.
Seems like he's trying to forget too. Because, teaming up with a pint-sized rapper called Tilo, he's gone sports metal. And some people have taken him seriously - this album includes cameos from Snoop Dogg, Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, Kid Rock and U-God. But despite their presence, it's still an hilarious concept. Especially with some clunking techno courtesy of The Crystal Method, and song titles - 'Narcotic', 'New Skin' - that don't so much wear their whining lyrical heart on their sleeve as have them etched into raw bone.
Yet, like his mate Kid Rock, this contains more than enough of the mysterious kick-ass factor. Lee raps like he plays drums - rough and heavy - and as befits his past, tracks like 'Crash' and 'Proposition Fuck You' successfully mix big hip-hop beats with some exceedingly heavy guitar riffing. Making his debut sonically far superior to the awful Limp Bizkit.
Apparently Tommy has the name of his new band tattooed across his buttocks. Amazingly, however, Methods Of Mayhem are not arse.
